DETECTIVES believe the shooting of a 27-year-old woman on Sunday night was an accident.

Emergency services were called to the Highland Park home at about 8:30pm responding to reports a young woman had been shot in the chest.

By the time emergency services arrived however, she had been left alone to die.

Ms Jovanovic was with a small group of friends at her ex-boyfriend Christos Panagakos' Highland Park home when the incident occurred.

Mr Panagakos spent yesterday being questioned by Detectives, who believe Mr Panagakios was not responsible for Ms Jovanovic's death.

Detective Acting Superintendent Brendan Smith stated to The Courier Mail that the current theory is the incident was an accident and a clear example of "where things go wrong".

“We want to get to the bottom of this as quickly as possible,” he said.

Mr Panagakos is allegedly known to police as an associate of the Barbaro underworld family and the Mongols bikie gang.

There is no indication that Ms Jovanovic's death was bikie-related or a domestic violence case, the victim was in good terms with her ex-boyfriend at the time of the incident.

A witness called for an ambulance as she fled the scene along with the four other guests, staying on the phone until she was told an ambulance had arrived.

"It's disgraceful" Smith said,

“I’m sure if one of them had been injured they would expect as much assistance from everyone there. Whilst they did call the ambulance there was a lot of first aid that could’ve been rendered at the time that may or may not have made a difference."

Police are yet to recover the allegedly unlicensed handgun used to shoot the 27-year-old in the chest.
